Coiba National Park
an UNESCO World Heritage Site
Coiba is amazed by untouched tropical jungle, high grade of endemism, but its impressive waters offer an even greater bounty of marine life. It’s surrounded by the largest coral reef systems of the Americas’ Pacific Coast, which act as a refuge for species escaping the effects of El Niño.
The Indo-Pacific’s warm currents, fully loaded with nutrients, make the area a favorite among various species of fish, sharks, whales, sea turtles, and rays.
The prison’s horror stories alienated visitors, allowing endemic species to evolve on the island.
Coiba shows successful coral reef growth under sheltered but very restricted conditions and serves as a refuge and source of species replenishment for other islands, including the Cocos and Galapagos, during and after El Niňo disturbances.
A Magical Adventure in Coiba Island
Coiba Island possesses amazing biodiversity, with a high variety of endemic birds, mammals, and plants. It’s also the last refuge for a number of threatened species that almost disappeared from the rest of Panama, such as the Crested Eagle and the Scarlet Macaw.
Without natural predators, Coiba’s capuchin monkeys shifted their behavior and spent more time in the ground. It might explain why human ancestors originally descended from trees.
