Coiba Island Prices 2026–2027: How Much It Costs to Visit Coiba

Two numbers decide your budget: the boat and the park permit. Here are both, with no small print.

Short answer: a private day in Coiba National Park costs $950 per boat for up to 6 people. On top of that, each visitor pays the park entrance fee to MiAmbiente, Panama’s Ministry of Environment (currently $20 for foreign visitors and $5 for Panamanians and residents). Six foreign friends on one boat spend about $178 each, permit included.

Coiba Tour Prices, Per Boat

Every tour is private: the boat, the captain and the day are yours. That is why we quote per boat and not per seat. The more of you there are, the less each one pays.

How Much Per Person? A Quick Calculator

Split the boat, then add the permit. These examples use the day trip at $950 and the $20 permit for foreign visitors:

GroupBoat eachPermit eachTotal each
2 people$475$20$495
4 people$238$20$258
6 people$158$20$178

Rounded to the dollar. Panamanian guests pay $5 for the permit instead of $20.

The Coiba National Park Entrance Fee

This is the one cost that is not ours. We do not charge it, we do not keep it, and it has nothing to do with Travel Coiba. It is paid to MiAmbiente, and it goes to the Coiba Fund, which pays for the rangers, the patrols and the upkeep of the park. In other words, it keeps Coiba wild for the next visitor.

Rates at the time of writing. Every visitor needs the permit, fishing trips included. Children under 12 do not pay, but they still have to be registered on the MiAmbiente site with the rest of the group. You pay it online on the official MiAmbiente protected areas site, and the rangers check it with your passport or ID at the station:

What the Boat Price Includes

  • A private boat with a licensed captain and a local guide who know the park’s currents and tides.
  • Snorkel gear and Deepboards for everyone, life jackets, water and ice. SUP boards at no extra cost if you ask.
  • A flexible plan: the captain picks the spots of the day by the tide, the currents and what you want to see.
  • Departure from Santa Catalina or from our home dock in El Bongo, Montijo.

What Else to Budget

  • Food: always made to order. Tell us before the trip what you want on board. Beach BBQ options start at $10 per person, or bring your own cuts and our chef grills them for free.
  • Getting there: your ride to Santa Catalina or El Bongo, and a night nearby, since boats leave early.
  • Extras: drinks with alcohol and tips are up to you.

Is Coiba Expensive?

Coiba is far, and that distance is the reason it is still wild: a long run across open sea, then 38 islands and more than 100 islets to explore. Most of the price is the trip itself, fuel and crew for a full day. Shared group boats from Santa Catalina cost less per seat. A private boat costs more in total, but for a family or a group of friends the cost per person gets close, and the day runs at your pace, with nobody rushing you out of the water.
