How to Get to Coiba Island, Panama: Road, Bus, Charter Flight and Boat
No bridge, no ferry, no airline. The last stretch is always a boat, and that is the best part.

Step 1: Panama City to Santiago de Veraguas
Every road trip to Coiba runs west on the Pan-American Highway. Santiago, the capital of Veraguas, is the natural stop: a real city with hotels, supermarkets, ATMs and gas stations.
Plan on 3.5 to 4 hours without traffic. The bottleneck is leaving Panama City: crossing the canal at rush hour can add a couple of hours, so leave early in the morning or after the evening peak.
Step 2: Pick Your Dock
Coiba is the largest island in the Pacific of Central America, and you reach it from two places on the Veraguas coast. Both work. The right one depends on where you sleep the night before.

El Bongo, Club Náutico de Veraguas
Only 30 minutes from Santiago, and 5 minutes from Puerto Mutis, the fishing port of the Gulf of Montijo. Sleep in Santiago and you are on the water early. The ride out runs through mangroves to the open Pacific, about 2 h 15 min to Coiba. Open in Google Maps ↗

Santa Catalina
The surf town closest to the park, roughly 5 to 6 hours from Panama City by road. If you are already staying there, it is the shortest boat ride: about 1 h 15 min to Coiba. Open in Google Maps ↗
Three Ways to Reach the Coast
Pan-American Highway west to Santiago. For El Bongo, head south toward Montijo and Puerto Mutis. For Santa Catalina, continue through Soná to the coast; the last part is a winding country road, so try to arrive in daylight.
Rental cars are easy to find in Panama City and at Tocumen airport.
Buses leave all day from the Albrook terminal in Panama City. Any bus to David stops in Santiago. For Santa Catalina, take a bus to Soná and then the local bus to the coast; the last local buses leave in the afternoon, so check that day’s schedule.
For El Bongo, a short taxi from Santiago takes you to the dock. Door-to-door shuttles to Santa Catalina also exist; most book over WhatsApp.
Private charter flights from Panama City reach the Santa Catalina area in under an hour, so you land rested instead of spending a day on the road. For families and groups, small charter planes can even fly straight to Coiba.

Step 3: The Boat Ride to Coiba
This is where the trip turns into a day at sea. From El Bongo the boat crosses the Gulf of Montijo and heads into the open Pacific; from Santa Catalina it is a straight run west. Keep an eye on the water: dolphins often show up on the way, and from July to October so do humpback whales.
Our tours are private, so the departure time is yours. We suggest an early start (around 6:30 am from El Bongo, 7:30 am from Santa Catalina) to make the most of the calm morning sea.
Before You Leave Home
- Park entrance: every visitor needs a MiAmbiente permit, paid online in advance. We explain it step by step in our Coiba prices guide.
- ID: carry your original passport or ID, in a waterproof case.
- Packing: read what to bring to Coiba so nothing important stays on the beach.
- Cash and fuel: fill up and use an ATM in Santiago; small coastal towns have fewer options.
